đ Donât Limit Yourself
You will surely have read the news about Ed Sheeranâs âShape Of Youâ copyright claim infringement, which was deemed not factual by a court just this week (read all details on this Music Ally article). Beyond the specificities of the claim in question, the ruling is likely to influence future similar claims, potentially alleviating fears of court cases and giving writers more freedom in their creative process.
With pop musicâs formulas and solutions getting more and more standardized (everyone likes to fit into a certain genre, or to a specific curatorâs taste), similarities between songs are bound to happen in increasing numbers, a fact we should all make peace with. I would go as far as saying that using the same compositional tools and instruments will in some cases help this standardisation, further increasing the possibility of similarities. Not to mention loops and samples services such as Splice, which while containing a staggering amount of content, also push âtrendyâ items at the forefront of their platform, thus augmenting the user base for a determined piece of audio.
And yes, notes are only 12 after all, right? The question now become, where do you draw the line between fortuity and a deliberate act of copying? Thatâs obviously very hard to say, and even harder to prove in court (reason why you should document your songwriting process).
Perhaps the above question can be answered by opening up the scope and solutions within pop music, to discover the infinite combinations and directions music could go. Donât limit yourself, walk that extra mile! :)
